The digital reconstruction of star images observed with large ground telescopes is developed. Solutions to the problems affecting the production of accurate and detailed reconstructions of stars are provided. A modification of the Knox-Thompson phase difference estimator is used to produce more accurate estimates. The performance of this estimator is evaluated by simulation at various signal-to-noise ratios. A nonlinear super resolution algorithm which appears to exhibit the best accuracy of any such algorithm proposed to date is described. An emperical evaluation was also conducted. These two techniques were used to restore images of the stars Betelgeuse and Capella. Significant findings are reported.
