High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) are believed to form in massive, compact star clusters. However the correlation between these young binary star systems and properties of their parent clusters are still poorly known. We are investigating the population of HMXB, produced in nearby starburst galaxies, using X-ray observations taken with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We find at least a few HMXBs in each of our target galaxies (NGC 4214, NGC 4449, NGC 5102 and NGC 5253), and there is a trend such that galaxies with higher rates of star formation have more HMXBs. We focus on the HMXB population in NGC 4449, and compare with a new catalogue of star clusters found from archival HST images. These show that while several HMXBs coincide with bright young star clusters, the majority do not. In several cases, we uniquely identify the HMXB with a point source. We discuss the implications of these X-ray-optical correlations.
