Observational results from the polar orbit S3-2 satellite include plasma, particle and DC field measurements of the topside ionosphere which deepen current understanding of the processes by which the magnetosphere and ionosphere are coupled. The high resolution of these S3-2 measurements has allowed small scale phenomena to be studied down to spatial distances of the order of 1 km. The high latitude convective electric field patterns observed are in essential agreement with those observed by OGO-6. It is also noted that when the IMF has a northward component, electric fields often become highly irregular at high latitudes, especially in the winter hemisphere. Observations made during an intense magnetic storm consistently showed that the direction of the electric field component along the satellite trajectory was able to close the major field aligned current pattern by means of Pederson current flow in the ionosphere, as would be expected for a magnetospheric current source.
