Space radiation has become a primary consideration in the design of modern spacecraft and in mitigating the risk factors for astronauts. Modern electronic devices and optical sensors are becoming more sensitive to high energy particle environments. This paper addresses engineering aspects of the radiation problem, by reviewing a brief history of radiation effects, the technical background to this problem, and current radiation model studies. Future plans to measure high energy particles are also presented.
