Results of experimental measurements of the energy spectra of muons of energies up to 1000 GeV in extensive air showers (EAS) of various electron densities are reported. A muon magnetic spectrometer at a depth of 40 m was used together with an apparatus composed of 20 groups of gas discharge counters located 35 m above it and at a horizontal displacement of 5 m to measure the muon and electron-photon components of the showers. Muon energy spectra obtained from showers of electron densities from 0.5 to greater than 50/sq m are found to obey a power law with an index from 0.9 to 1.2. Electron density spectra for muons with threshold energies from 100 to 500 GeV are also found to follow a power law, with indexes from 0.7 to 0.1. Results indicate that as the electron density decreases from 10 to 1/sq m, the muon energy spectrum hardens, which result is interpreted as a response to changes in EAS particle number.
