This paper describes a new type of spectrum analyzer for radio waves developed at the Radioastronomy Department of Paris-Meudon (France) in collaboration with the Space Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Graz (Austria). Unlike almost every existing analyzers, this machine, performs real-time digital spectral analysis using signal processing dedicated chips. Both theoretical study and practical experience have shown that such an approach offers significant advantages over conventional analyzers. The device is primarily intended for studying polarized decametric radio emissions (DAM) from Jupiter and the Sun in the 5 to 60 MHz frequency range. Considering the life time of the electro-magnetic phenomena (varying between 1 ms and several seconds) and their very low relative power, a suitable device must provide at least 1 ms time resolution and 70 dB dynamic range in order to manage the man-made interference problems in ground-based low frequency radio astronomy. The authors particularly focus on this last consideration.
