The Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared (HIFI) is a dedicated spectrometer onboard ESA's Herschel Space Observatory, utilizing radio technologies to carry out spectroscopic observations in the 480-1,250 and 1,420-1,916 GHz (625-240 and 211-157 micron) spectral ranges. Low-noise SIS and HEB mixers are employed with hybrid Acousto-Optical and Auto-Correlator Spectrometer backends to achieve a resolving power of up to 10^7 within a diffraction-limited (11-42 arcsec) beam. Sub-millimeter observing strategies are adapted into HIFI's Observing Modes. The HIFI science objectives center on understanding the interrelation between the stars and the interstellar medium in galaxies. With HIFI's high spectral resolution, one can deduce the physical and chemical processes of material exhibiting many molecular line transitions including water, and fine-structure transitions of atoms, their ions, and isotopes. The HIFI Instrument Control Center is located at SRON, Groningen, the Netherlands. The NASA Herschel Science Center will support US Astronomers in proposals and data analysis using HIFI to conduct Key Projects and Open-Time Programs.
