Scientific paper

The nearby shell-type supernova remnant Vela Jnr has recently been discovered to be a source of high energy TeV gamma rays -- a promising sign of the interaction between cosmic ray protons and interstellar hydrogen. The robust confirmation of an association between the TeV gamma ray emission and the neutral ISM would provide support for this scenario. We will use the ATCA to image HI in the region to a resolution of ~2.5' in order to firmly establish this association and obtain reliable mass and column density estimates. Such results are a crucial component in testing for the hadronic origin of SNR gamma-rays.
