We propose to expand the number of high HI peak brightness temperature [>35 K] sight lines for which 21-cm absorption has been measured in the LMC from 18 to 30, using the CABB on ATCA. All of our targets have bright continuum fluxes (>50 mJy) and can therefore be observed within a few hours. The new data will not only increase the number of HI opacity measurements in this important part of parameter space (where opacities are likely to be high and CO clouds tend to be located), but will expand the sample to regions far from the 30 Doradus star-forming region, providing an important comparison sample for the MAGMA GMC catalogue. Our principal objectives are to identify the precursors to molecular clouds, correct HI masses for opacity, and assess the possible dynamical influence of atomic envelopes on molecular clouds.
