A HF-radar echo experiment on the Martian surface layers will be performed by using the Plasma Wave and Sounder instrument onboard the Planet-B satellite, which will be launched in 1998 and will arrived at Mars in 1999, following a two-year observation period in high eccentric orbit. When the 'ALT' mode of the instrument is used near the perigee of Mars, which transmits 9 MHz HF radar, the detection of the echo profile will be applied for (1) global mapping of Martian surface topography, (2) regional variation of radar reflectance, (3) surveying subsurface layers at specific sites, and (4) exploring for ground water.
