In his astronomical work (Astronomy), conceived as a part of his great philosophical treatise Wars of the Lord, the medieval scholar Levi ben Gerson (1288 - 1344) repeatedly refers to a mathematical procedure called by him heqqesh tahbuli (translated as "heuristic reasoning" by Goldstein [1986]) and used, for instance, in the derivation of parameters for his lunar model, in the construction of his tables of sines, and in the calculation of the thickness of the fluid layer between planetary spheres. Using the Latin version of Levi's Astronomy, the author here attempts to provide an explanation of Levi's method, a description of the kind of problems for which Levi used it, and to give reconstructions of some of its applications in the Astronomy.
