I will introduce the Herschel Space Observatory and give an overview of its status and early mission phases. This will be followed by a discussion of important aspects learned inflight regarding observatory performance from the point of view of the observer, and with examples from actual observations. Finally, the prospects offered by future calls for observing proposals will be presented.
