HERMES is a high-resolution, fiber-fed, echelle spectrograph that is optimized for high throughput and high instrumental stability, recording the complete spectrum from 380~nm to 900 nm in a single exposure. The project involves the Institute of Astronomy of the K. U. Leuven (Belgium), the Royal Observatory of Belgium, the Institut d'Astronomie et d'Astrophysique of the U. L. B. (Belgium), the Thringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg (Germany) and the Observatoire de Genève (Switzerland). HERMES will be mounted on the Flemish MERCATOR telescope at La Palma, Spain.
