The R-method, which consists of comparing theoretical lifetimes of model stars on the red giant branch (RGB) and on the horizontal branch (HB) with observed number ratios of RGB and HB stars, is applied to all the clusters which fulfill four requirements. These are: (1) no blue HB extension is missing; (2) the separation between the asymptotic giant branch and RGB is clear; (3) the contamination due to field stars is low; and (4) the samples are populous and complete over a well-defined area. The derived values are reported and a plot of Y-values versus metal abundance for each individual cluster is shown. The mean value for the helium abundance in globular clusters deduced through the R-method is 0.23 + or -0.02. A constant Y with varying metal content seems consistent with the data.
