Stellar Interiors: Nuclear Reactions, Nucleosynthesis

Scientific paper

Heavy elements with mass numbers A > 56 are synthesized in red giant stars by the slow neutron capture process (s-process). The neutrons required for this mechanism are provided by (α,n)-reactions in the helium burning shell of the star. The most favourite neutron source for the s-process is the reaction 22Ne(α,n)25Mg. For this reaction has a negative Q-value of -0.482 MeV, the competive reaction 22Ne(α,γ)26Mg may not be neglected at low stellar temperatures. Recent measurements on both reactions in the energy region of helium shell burning and a revised discussion of the stellar reaction rates are reported here.
