Elastic collisions of solar-wind protons with He in the local ISM (LISM) are investigated analytically using a single-collision model. The theoretical principles involved and the construction of the model are described in detail, and the results are presented graphically. The few frontal collisions, with impact parameters less than a few times 0.1 Bohr radius, are found to have a greater effect on LISM energy transfer than the more numerous nonfrontal collisions, which mainly affect the spatial distribution of LISM He (although without significantly altering the shape of the gravitational focusing cone). It is concluded that the collisions studied cannot account for the discrepancy between spectrally measured LISM H temperatures and the He temperature measured by photometric mapping of the gravitational focusing cone.
