The early major findings of the four HEAO-A cosmic X-ray and gamma-ray experiments will be discussed. A comparative analysis of the actual and expected instrument performance will be presented. The unique contributions of high energy astrophysics to the study of the universe will be highlighted with specific HEAO-A observations. Plans for the ongoing observations will be shown. The observatory capabilities will be briefly compared with those of previous satellites.
