The HEAO-2/Einstein X-ray telescope was launched on November 13, 1978. The paper focuses on a survey of the techniques used to obtain the highest system reliability in the electrical system design and operation. These include the use of highly reliable parts, the use of redundant instruments and subsystems, redundant command and data interfaces, and alternate or overlapping operating modes. These techniques are applied after a reliability assessment of the developing design. 'Single failure points' which can disable critical functions of the system are identified and eliminated. The flight of the HEAO-2/Einstein Observatory has been a resounding success.
