New spectral observations of the peculiar WC5 star HD 16523 have confirmed the strong emission doublet O VI λλ3811, 3834. Rapid variability of these lines has been detected on ≡1 hour intervals. The spectral type of HD 16523 is uncertain as estimated from different criteria. The dependence of emission line widths on the ionization potentials is characterized by considerable scattering. The spatial distribution of WR stars with strengthened oxygen lines and WR stars with probable relativistic companions are found to be similar.
