It has for some time been conjectured that brown dwarfs constitute much of the universe's 'dark matter', in that they would be small and possess no way of generating visible light. An extrapolation from known stellar populations suggests that brown dwarfs would dominate the mass of the Galaxy. A recent survey of 40 white dwarf stars by Zuckerman and Becklin (1987) has yielded evidence that one of these is accompanied by an orbiting 'planet' of dim, star-like appearance that is insufficiently massive for the ignition of thermonuclear fusion.
