An expression is derived for the Hamiltonian describing drift motion up to quadratic terms in the Larmor radius of a particle. Expressions for second-order drift are obtained in curvilinear coordinates which are naturally related to the magnetic field. The conservation of the longitudinal adiabatic invariant follows from the general theorems of mechanics in the Hamiltonian approach. This expression is of value in high-temperature plasma physics related to particle confinement in traps and in astrophysical applications.
