We have constructed a simple model for the halo regions of galaxies responsible for producing Mg II absorption lines in the spectra of quasars. Galactic halos are assumed to be identical, filled with clouds, the number density of clouds decreasing with radius. The model takes into account the photoionization of the clouds by the background ultraviolet radiation field and the curve-of-growth effects as the equivalent width is calculated for individual clouds. Combined with an assumed abundance gradient in the halo, the model successfully explains the observed anticorrelation between equivalent width and impact parameter, the doublet ratio, the equivalent width distribution of the Mg II absorption lines, the column density distribution of neutral hydrogen, and the distribution of number of clouds as function of Mg II column density.
