One of the most remarkable results of recent space missions has been to demonstrate that the nucleus, coma, and tail models inferred to date from various astrophysical methods are in substantial agreement with in situ observations. Of particular interest have been comparisons of the complementary in situ mass spectrometry measurements and remote spectroscopy observations. The problem posed by carbon depletion has been resolved in light of the discovery of organic compounds in the dust grains. It is found likely that some relatively unaltered interstellar grains with organic mantles are released from cometary nuclei.
