The Japanese Planet-A, which was launched on August 19, 1985, is the last of a fleet of five spacecraft which are to study the comet Halley. The other four include the Soviet Vega 1 and 2 probes, the European Giotto spacecraft, and a second Japanese spacecraft, called Sakigake (Pioneer). All five spacecraft are to meet Halley during its passage through the ecliptic plane in which the earth orbits the sun. The comet will also be observed by a worldwide network of telescopes and by instruments on a Spacelab and several satellites in earth orbit. Attention is given to details regarding the studies conducted by the five spacecraft during their encounter with Halley.
