We have found possible evidence that boxy-type elliptical galaxies favor the environment of clusters of galaxies, while disky-type ellipticals prefer the field environment. This observation suggests that most elliptical galaxies in the clusters of galaxies resulted from a major merger between two gas-rich systems. On the other hand, field elliptical galaxies were probably formed by a dissipative collapse during an earlier era of galaxy formation and have experienced no major merger event. The various fine structures, such as shells and the variety of stellar populations, observed in field elliptical galaxies may be due to recent minor merger events which hardly altered the fundamental dynamical structure of the galaxies.
