We propose to use the H_2 1-0 S(1) line in the spectra of proto- planetary nebulae (PPNs) as a kinematic probe of the interaction zone between the AGB envelope and the fast wind. H_2 emission is seen in PPNs at the ends of the bipolar lobes and in some cases at opposite ends of the dark lane between the lobes. The bipolar shape of many PNs and PPNs has been attributed to collimation of the fast wind by a region of high density shielded by dust. Measurement of the velocities of the H_2 will sample the conditions in the PPN lobes and also in this shielded zone between the lobes. In this proposal, we request H_2 spectral observations of 4 bipolar PPNs. For all of them, we have recent, complementary HST-NICMOS H_2 images that show the spatial location of the emission. These observations will provide crucial insights into the development of the lobes and the fast outflows that are shaping them.
