We present high-resolution, near infrared observations of CO and H3+ toward massive young stars MWC 1080, MWC 349, and LKHα 101 acquired with NIRSPEC on the Keck II telescope. H3+ is a molecule of fundamental importance to ion-molecule chemistry in the interstellar medium. It has been observed toward Cygnus OB2 #12 through 10.2 magnitudes of diffuse interstellar material as well as toward galactic center sources sampling both diffuse and dense interstellar material and toward star forming regions where most of the extinction is due to dense material. There has been some controversy concerning whether the H3+ observed toward dense clouds may actually originate in the diffuse interstellar medium along the lines of sight. It has been suggested that a correlation of N(H3+) with distance to massive young stars is indicative of a significant diffuse cloud contribution to the measured H3+ column densities toward distant objects. Our sources sample lines of sight dominated by either dense (LkHα 101) or diffuse (MWC 349) material and we discuss the possible origins of H3+ absorption in the ISM in light of our results.
