The basic properties of the H3+ ion are summarized, along with the crucial role of this molecular ion in interstellar gas phase chemistry. Some significant observations of H3+ in dark and diffuse clouds and in the Galactic Center are highlighted, together with the first tentative detection in an external galaxy.
