The results of a pilot survey in the H2O 22.2-GHz line of 2 sq deg of the galactic plane are reported. The survey has been carried out in a systematic way on a rectangular grid without regard to known sources, and as such is the first of its kind. With an approximate sensitivity of 2 Jy, and a completeness limit of between 7 and 10 Jy, 26 sources have been detected, of which about two-thirds are new. Many appear to be associated with the W 43 complex at l of about 30 deg, and these show a velocity dispersion well in excess of that of CO emission. The second region, close to l of about 20 deg is relatively poor in H2O maser emission. Most of the sources are expected to be associated with star formation regions, with central stars of type late O through early B, although for at least one-fifth of the objects, there is no apparent associated continuum emission, and only about one-third are associated with main-line OH emission sources.
