The ratio of the surface brightness of the radiation of H2O(+) relative to that of CO(+) for the tail of each of 13 comets has been evaluated qualitatively and classed as 'high,' 'moderate,' or 'low,' primarily by comparison of direct photographs on blue-violet and red-sensitive emulsions. Five, four, and four comets were assigned to the respective classes. There is no evidence in this small sample for dependence of this ratio upon heliocentric distance, the 'age' of the comet, the presence of a bright type II tail, or, for comets observed after perihelion passage, the orbital parameter q. For the three comets for which the plates were suitable for an evaluation, there is no indication of a variation in the ratio from one part of the tail to another.
