Galactic interstellar medium (ISM) studies have undergone a renaissance in the past ten years due largely to recent large-scale surveys of the Galactic ISM. New surveys of neutral hydrogen (H I), in particular the International Galactic Plane Survey (IGPS), excel because of their exceptional spatial dynamic range, combining single-dish and interferometric data for arcminute resolution imaging over areas of many degrees. These surveys are allowing us to probe the physics of the global ISM in more detail than ever before. Using these surveys we are able to probe parsec-scale features on the very largest, kiloparsec-scale, objects. For example, we can now study the gradual process by which H I supershells dissolve through the action of gas instabilities and the formation of very cold structures along H I supershells. The IGPS, together with recent all-sky H I surveys, enable a holistic approach to studies of the evolution of the ISM. In this contribution I focus on some of the fantastic results to have come out of the IGPS and other recent H I surveys on topics ranging from the large-scale H I structure of the Milky Way, the role of large deterministic structures in forming small-scale structure and the structure of the cold neutral medium.
