The detection of 800 million solar masses of neutral hydrogen in the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052 is reported. Various properties of NGC 1052 and NGC 4278 (another elliptical containing large amounts of hydrogen) are compared, including their optical structure, kinematic properties, and observed nuclear activity. It is suggested that neutral hydrogen and nuclear emission are related phenomena and that infall of interstellar matter to the galactic center may have triggered the nuclear activity.
