Galaxies: Individual (Cassiopeia 1)

Scientific paper

We present H I maps of a recently discovered dwarf galaxy near the IC 342 Maffei 1-2 Group, Cassiopeia 1. Our data show that Cas 1 has a total H I mass of 1.5×108 Msolar, assuming a distance of 4.5 Mpc. The highest column density gas forms a ring around a central depression in the H I distribution and the peak of the H I gas is offset from the distribution of starlight. Isovelocity contours indicate that the galaxy is in solid-body rotation; a region of large velocity dispersion is approximately coincident with observed current star formation activity in Cas 1.
