In order to investigate the possibility of the physical association of compact radio sources with supernova remnants, H I absorption measurements have been made for seven of the nine possible candidates proposed by Ryle et al. (1978). For three objects (0503 + 466, 1849 + 005, and 1910 + 052) these measurements rule out a physical association. The derived lower limits from the absorption profiles considerably exceed the estimated distances to the SNR and are consistent with an extragalactic origin for these sources. For two others (2048 + 312 = CL4 and 2013 + 370) the lower limits agree with the distance estimates of the SNRs, and other stringent tests are required to show whether the sources are galactic or extragalactic. The large redshift of 0125 + 628 seems to preclude a galactic origin. The observation of 1910 + 052 indicates that an upper limit to the distance of SS 433 is 4.7 kpc.
