R Crb Stars: Calcium Lines

Scientific paper

The authors present results of spectral observations of R CrB during the initial phase of a rather shallow and simple visual light minimum in 1985. The dispersion of spectrograms (4.4 and 16.7 nm/mm) allowed them to trace a development of the H and K Ca II lines: the disappearance of absorption lines and the appearance of narrow emissions comparable with other narrow emission lines (Ti II, Sr II, Sc II, Y II, etc). An attempt is made to interpret the disappearance of absorption lines and the behaviour of H and K line profiles during a light minimum as a consequence of smoothing the temperature minimum and heating the chromosphere and photosphere. The modelling has also shown that the chromospheric density increases by 1 - 2 orders of magnitude.
