We present a comparison of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, covering 460 square degrees of sky in five bands, and the Guide Star Catalogue 2.2, covering the entire sky in two bands, both released in June 2001. There are small mean astrometric shifts between the catalogs; for stars the mean differences are 0.11 arcsec in RA and 0.04 arcsec in declination. (An astrometric comparison with the FIRST survey shows comparable differences in Dec, but there is significantly better RA agreement between FIRST & GSC2 than between FIRST & SDSS.) The RMS scatter about the mean is 0.14 arcsec in RA and 0.13 arcsec in Dec. Magnitude differences for stars in both F and J (with SDSS g and r data transformed into GSC2 bands) are about 0.13 mag RMS, and are better than 0.10 mag RMS for stars close to the calibrating sequences near the plate centers. Classification agreement for GSC2 objects with high classification confidence and F magnitude in the range (15.5, 18.5) are >95 nonstars. Plots show some dependence on magnitude, latitude, and other effects. The GSC2.2, while somewhat shallower and with fewer bands than the SDSS, covers the entire sky with data having at least comparable astrometric accuracy to SDSS, and with photometric and classification accuracies suitable for many scientific projects.
