This note presents analytical expressions for the growth rates of modulationally unstable Alfven-ion-cyclotron waves propagating along an external magnetic field. The results may be relevant to the electromagnetic ion-cyclotron resonance heating of laboratory plasmas, and they can also play an important role in the theory of nonlinear hydromagnetic waves in space and astrophysical plasmas.
