The group velocity of whistlers propagating in a homogeneous cold magnetoplasma is derived on the basis of wave dispersion relations. Frequencies below the electron gyrofrequency are considered and the study is limited to a one-ion plasma. Both slow and fast mode propagation is examined, with the slow mode always guided by the magnetostatic field and the fast mode guided only for frequencies in the whistler band. Numerical computations use ionospheric parameters, considering the topside ionosphere where ionized hydrogen is the major constituent and the F region where oxygen is the dominant ion.
