In July 2010 Rosseta mission will flyby its second and largest science target - the asteroid 21 Lutetia. Previously classified as an M-type asteroid, it was shown recently that its near-IR spectrum is unusually flat and moreover it resembles the spectra of carbonaceous chondrites and characterizing C-type asteroids. In the framework of a ground observations campaign needed to improve the knowledge of mineralogical and physical characteristics of 21 Lutetia, we present the latest near IR observations in the 0.8-2.5 µm interval carried out in remote mode from CODAM (Meudon, France) in March and April 2006 using the 3 meter aperture telescope IRTF located at Mauna Kea-Hawaii.
A chi-square test for the available near-IR spectra of Lutetia since 2003 using the spectrophotometry data obtained by 52-Color Asteroid Survey, and some spectra of the RELAB database was performed. In all cases, C-type asteroids and carbonaceous chondrites - especially Orgueil, a CI meteorite - yielded the best fit. These results are consistent with a primitive composition for 21 Lutetia. The best correlation coefficients for the best fit spectrum similar to the spectra of Lutetia span the range 91-95%.
With another two oppositions left until the flyby, a campaign of systematic near IR spectroscopical observations to map the entire lightcurve phase (8.165 hours) and further refine the mineralogical properties of 21 Lutetia by investigating any surface inhomogenity can be prepared.
