Io is the most geologically active of all the planets or satellites in
the solar system. Most of what is known about it has been discovered in
the past decade. This paper reviews recent advances in the knowledge of
Io's surface, with emphasis placed on facts obtained using astronomical
instruments on the ground and in Earth-orbit.
