We briefly describe three methods for determining the morphology of an asteroid from its disk-integrated photometry: polyhedron method, ellipsoidal octants' one and photomorphographic analysis method. We compare the results obtained with these different inversion methods and discuss the characteristics of each method. We also compare these models with the first image of 951 Gaspra taken by the Galileo camera from a distance of 16,200 km. In this paper we will concentrate on the global morphology of the shape, ignoring local features which do not give observable signature in the lightcurves. The results show that different techniques of asteroid lightcurve inversion have reached a satisfying level of reliability. In particular, the preliminary agreement with the first Galileo image, shows the validity of the methods and the techniques used up to now to study asteroids. In fact earth-based observations will remain for a long time the main source of data for improving our general understanding of the asteroid population.
