Lidar measurements of the stratospheric nitrogen dioxide NO2 have been performed in July 1982 at the lidar facility of the Observatoire de Haute Provence. Using the differential absorption lidar technique, a value of (1.7 + or - 0.5) x 10 to the 16th/sq cm was obtained for the night-time stratospheric content of NO2 between 20 km and 40 km. The altitude distribution of NO2, derived from the integrated values, showed a maximum value of 45 ppbv at 32 km.
