Although the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) instruments are not dedicated to solar observing, their capabilities are such that they can extend and expand the solar hard x ray and gamma ray observations accomplished by instruments such as those of SMM and Hinotori. These capabilities are discussed, with emphasis on the use of the instruments by guest investigators. Instrumental problems associated with observations of large flares are also discussed. The various issues are illustrated with data obtained during the recent period of extraordinary activity on the Sun.
