A design for the Grazing Incidence Solar Telescope (Grist), which is intended for the acquisition of high resolution spatial and spectral measurements of the sun over the 90 to 1700 A wavelength range, is detailed. The optical assembly consists of two sets of optical elements, one for X-ray imaging and the other for attitude measurement. The alignment assembly, which positions instruments in the focal plane of the optical assembly, the spectrometers in the focal plane, and the support structure of the telescope are illustrated. Grist has been designed for repeated flights on Spacelab, where it will be controlled and monitored by a payload specialist. Visual displays and X-ray measurements of the sun would be transmitted to a ground operations center, where data would be recorded and from which instructions could be sent to the mission specialist. The feasibility of the telescope design has been established and further design activity will be undertaken when and if the project is approved for hardware development.
