Oscillations observed in the mesospheric velocities measured at Jicamarca, Peru, are interpreted to be a manifestation of atmospheric gravity waves with periods of less than 4 min to more than 1 hr. The waves with periods exceeding 1 hr have amplitudes weaker than those predicted by tidal theory. Acoustic gravity waves with periods of less than 4 min are usually weakly present, but on one occasion, a well-defined wave packet was observed. The dominant waves have a period of about 10 to 20 min. It is shown that the measurements are not sufficient by themselves to provide an independent estimate of wavelengths of the dominant waves. Using the theoretical dispersion and polarization relations for atmospheric gravity waves, it is shown that the observed waves are vertically evanescent and have horizontal wavelengths of 200 to 300 km at periods of about 15 min.
