Results are reported for observations of large-scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) detected at 30 MHz by riometers at two stations in Brazil. The riometers and observational procedures are described, and one observation is compared with the simultaneous measurement of the Faraday rotation of a 136-MHz signal from the ATS-3 satellite. The TIDs are found mainly at night, have wavelengths greater than 500 km, and have other features similar to the predicted characteristics of internal gravity waves propagating in the F-region. It is noted that riometric study of internal gravity waves is feasible only in regions where the F-layer ionization is sufficient to cause detectable absorption of VHF radiowaves, which is generally confined to a zone approximately 30 deg wide on either side of the magnetic equator.
