The evolution of the universe is discussed, starting from the principles of general relativity and Hubble's Cosmological Principle concerning the uniformity of the universe. The variation of the geometry of the universe with time, the curvature of space, and the expansion, uniformity, and age of the universe are explained. Observations of remnants of the primeval fireball and the cosmic helium abundance are consistent with present cosmological theory.
