Consideration is given to the possible existence of gravitational-wave pulses for which the relative velocity of two test particles initially at rest is nonzero after passage of the pulses. It is shown that the source of such pulses with velocity memory may be the passage of a gravitating body through a gravitating flattened configuration, such as the passage of a star through the accretion disk around a black hole. The physical properties of these pulses are examined and numerical estimates of the expected effects are presented.
