A review of the Gunn (1967) formalism on the gravitational lensing effect of smooth inhomogeneities in the universe leads to several new, simple analytical expressions for the dispersion in amplification. Attention is given to two density-fluctuation distribution and evolution models: (1) a universe dominated by cold dark matter, and (2) a scale-free universe whose initial density-fluctuation spectrum corresponds to white noise. While the dispersion in amplification due to large-scale structures is negligible for both models, the dispersion substantially increases when matter distribution on smaller scales is considered; it is also very sensitive to the character of the mass distribution.
