Deflection of light by galaxies or clusters of galaxies occasionally produces highly magnified - sometimes multiple - images of very distant sources. That means we can use the universe as a telescope and look much further and with higher resolution than without this gravitational lens effect. In individual lens systems we can study the source structure and the chemical composition of the high redshift objects in detail, with a whole sample of lenses we can statistically analyze properties of the lenses and the sources. This way we try to get a better understanding of the frequency and evolution of certain classes of objects in the young universe.
